Supporting Materials

Your supporting materials consist of five items.

1. CV / Resume. It is very useful to enclose a concise CV / Resume that makes clear what you have done since graduating from high school without leaving any gaps. It should describe briefly any full time jobs that you have held, research experience while a student, publications (if any), and awards and honors.

2. Letters of Recommendation are required from at least two people. You do not need to have more than two recommendations, but you can have more if you want to. Ask each recommender to prepare a letter written on the school's letterhead. Each letter must be placed in the school's envelope, with the recommender's written signature across the seal, and included with your package of supporting materials. Alternatively, some or all of your recommenders can submit their letter on-line. To do this you must check the box in your initial on-line application to the University to indicate that a specific recommender wishes to submit their letter electronically. The University then contacts the recommender directly with instructions on how to do so.

3. Transcript(s). An official transcript is required from each institution attended. Transcripts must bear the registrar's signature or official seal to be considered official and acceptable.

4. Departmental Form that summarizes the six most advanced courses you have completed in both economics and mathematics at a university or college. You can download this form in pdf or Word format.

  • If you cannot print out this form, then it is acceptable if you create your form which contains the same information in a similar format.
  • List only courses that have been already graded, and not courses that you are currently taking, or are planning to take.
  • In the first five columns you should fill in the course number, title, the school at which it was taken, date of completion, and grade exactly as they appear on your transcript.
  • In the sixth column, mention the main textbook for the course, if there was such a text (it is enough to write the author(s) name(s) and the first few words of the title as space permits).
  • If you have taken more than six courses in any of these disciplines, pick the six most advanced ones (but ensure that you mention core courses in intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics and econometrics).
  • If you are taking very "substantial" courses during the Fall term and do not have the grades in time to be included in this form application, you may fax an updated version of the form directly to the attention of the Graduate Secretary in the Department of Economics at +1-847-491-7001 after you know your grade. By substantial courses we mean advanced math courses such as Real Analysis or graduate economics courses.
  • If your Fall courses are standard economics courses of a similar level to those you have taken before, there is no need to fax their results after submitting the application.

5. Copies of GRE, and (if necessary) TOEFL/IELTS/TSE results. If you have already received your GRE and TOEFL/IELTS and TSE results, send hard copies of the results. More details on these tests are described in Steps 3 and 4 of the applications process. If you receive your results after you submit your application, you may fax your results to the attention of the Graduate Secretary at the Economics Department at +1-847-491-7001.
