The Department has space to provide carrel accommodations for 58 graduate students in their second year and above. Typically about 65-70 post-first year students seek accommodations. Therefore some rationing and sharing is needed. Allocations are based on long-standing priorities that the Department has set for the allocation of the quality and quantity of space:
1. WCAS day-school instructors
2. Research Assistants
3. Holders of dissertation fellowships from NU or elsewhere
4. Teaching Assistants
5. School of Continuing Studies evening program instructors
Other advanced graduate students will be accommodated where space permits. This does mean that some incumbents who will no longer fall into the above categories may be evicted at the end of the year.
It is clearly in the interests of those students receiving Research Assistantships or outside funding to inform the Associate Chair so as to establish their claim. Space allocations for the coming academic year are announced about Labor Day, and people move in and out between then and the start of classes.
First-year students are assigned lockers, located in room 3212, to store their books and personal items. There are also coat hooks. To receive an assignment, and to be given the keypad access code to the door, and the combination to your individual locker, please see the Graduate Secretary.
