Treb Allen's research interests are in international trade and economic development. His research has examined how geography shapes the spatial distribution of people and economic activity as well as how access to information about market conditions elsewhere affects the prices farmers receive for their produce in the Philippines. In ongoing research, he is studying how openness to trade affects the volatility of farmer income in India and how barriers to migration lead to the misallocation of resources across space.
